Thu, 2025-05-08 11:50 - One of various Irish minor railways the Co. Donegal Joint Committee, and the Strabane and Letterkenny Railway, ran a network of narrow gauge services in the north west of Ireland - and they helped pioneer the use of diesel railcars. Sadly this innovation did not stave off complete closure at the end of 1959. This leaflet was issued for the penultimate Summer season of 'excursions' and includes an outlie timetable of services as well as details of fares and connections with other systems such as the old Great Northern Railway, the UTA and CIÉ whose many services shown on the map would soon also be decimated by closure and bus replacement.

The covers use poetry to evoke the atmosphere of this most rugged county. There's also a reminder of the then mandatory Customs examinations at the Border between the Republic and Northern Ireland that the lines crossed.

Tue, 2025-05-06 09:28 - Liggett and Myers is cashing in on the legendary character Robin Hood, but even more so on the successful movie about the legend that premiered in 1938 – “The Adventures of Robin Hood” starring Errol Flynn.

But why a female Robin Hood? Cigarette ads heavily targeted women in the 1930s. Tobacco companies saw a new market to exploit by associating smoking with concepts of female empowerment, modernity, and sophistication.
